From Backstreet Boy to R.C. Sproul's Associate Pastor?
A little while ago over at Challies.com, my friend Tim conducted a four part interview with Burk Parsons, who is not only R.C. Sproul's associate pastor at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, but is also to be his replacement when Dr. Sproul dies. At first I just scanned the various parts, until a line stuck out to me. Tim asked Burk if it was true that he used to be a member of the backstreet boys to which Burk replied, 'yes'. It turns out that he was one of the original members of the band, but he quit before they got 'big' out of a conviction that he was called to pastoral ministry and that he could not glorify God by shaking his body for teenaged girls on stage! Throughout the interview Burk gives an inside perspective on 'boy bands', through his own story with the backstreet boys, and then, n'sync (he was asked to be a founding member of the latter band a few years later), and he also gives an insider's view of life with R.C. Sproul and the ministry of Ligoneer and St. Andrews Pres. Most importantly, he models models a wise life: what gain is it to gain the whole world yet forfeit your soul! I'd highly recommend printing and reading all four parts (as I did). They can be found here:
Part 1; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4
